Descendants of Frederick Brunner Generation No. 1 1. FREDERICK1 BRUNNER was born Abt. 1818 in Switzerland, and died 1894. He married CHRISTINE NAFSKER. She was born Abt. 1824 in Switzerland. Notes for FREDERICK BRUNNER: There are indications that the Brunner family emigrated from Germania, Switzerland or Prussia. One must remember that in the mid 1860s the area we know now as "Germany" was really a group of thirty-eight independent states inhabited by the descendants of the Germanic people. (It was the Congress of Vienna in 1815 after the defeat of Napolean which created these thirty-eight states from a consolidation of hundreds of even smaller states.) These thirty-eight independent states included Austria, Bavaria, Prussia and others. It was not until Otto von Bismarck united these states in 1871 into The German Empire that the modern day "Germany" was created. Prior to that time, an immigrant may have stated that he came from one of the individual states comprising the area of "Germania". We will never know who Frederick was named after but this was a time when there were Fredericks as monarchs so he could have been named after a member of the reigning monarchy or another family member. Jeff Hause, Frederick's 3rd great grand son, is working on a Brunner family tree and has located Frederick and Christine in the 1860 Census residing in Cleveland. Jeff notes that Frederick's place of birth was listed as Bavaria and in 1860 he was married to Christine (35). The 1860 Census shows their children as Samuel (8), Peter (4), Frederick (2) and Christian (11) who Jeff indicates was not listed again in another Census. In the 1870 Census Jeff Hause indicates the family is listed as living in Brooklyn, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. (Brooklyn is in what we now know as the greater Cleveland area but at this time was probably a short distance South of the City of Cleveland and a farming area.) C F Brunner is 52 in this Census and Jeff indicates that the Census has the children of Frederick and Christine as Samuel (17), Peter (14), Frederick (11), Albert (8), Gottfreid (6), Elizabeth (4) and Christine ( 6 months). Jeff Hause has also located Frederick and Christine in the 1880 Census. Frederick (63) is shown as a shoemaker. It lists Christine (56) and only three children: Albert (a "moulder", age 19), George ( a cigar maker, age 17) and Elizabeth (14 and in school). Jeff Hause's research is important as prior to his locating Frederick & Christine in these Census, it was thought that they had only two children, Albert & Godfrey. There became a fair number of Brunners residing in the Cleaveland area and Jeff's determining that there were more children could open up whether there are more descendants of Frederick & Christine. Children of FREDERICK BRUNNER and CHRISTINE NAFSKER are: 2. i. ALBERT2 BRUNNER, b. September 12, 1861, Switzerland; d. October 26, 1927, Cleveland, Ohio. 3. ii. GODFREY J. BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1865, Ohio. iii. SAMUEL BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1852. iv. PETER BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1856. v. FREDERICK BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1858. vi. CHRISTIAN BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1849. vii. ELIZABETH BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1866. viii. CHRISTINE BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1869. Generation No. 2 2. ALBERT2 BRUNNER (FREDERICK1) was born September 12, 1861 in Switzerland, and died October 26, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio. He married MARY WAGNER October 07, 1890 in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of ERNST WAGNER and AUGUSTA STOLDT. She was born April 03, 1872 in Cleveland, Ohio, and died March 09, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio. Notes for ALBERT BRUNNER: According to a Return Of A Birth as to Frederick Brunner which was recorded with the Cleveland Police Department, Albert Brunner was born in "Germania" and he was 35 at the time of Frederick's birth in 1897. Information provided by Alfred's son, Albert G. Brunner, indicates a birth date of September 13, 1861. His Certificate Of Death completed by Albert G. Brunner shows his father as having been born on September 12, 1861 in Ohio. There are other indications Albert came from Switzerland as the church records for the Brunner family show his father was from Switzerland as does his Certificate of Death. The 1900 Census also shows his father, Albert Brunner, Sr, has having been born in Switzerland. It is assumed that his family immigrated from Switzerland. Albert Brunner resided at 3922 Prospect; Cleveland, Ohio in the 1880-1890's as shown in a scrapbook of his wife, Mary Wagner Brunner, which Susan Carlin-Turner (her great grand daughter) has in her possession. Marjorie Carlin remembers Albert Brunner living at 56 Colgate Street in Cleveland. He had two horses which he kept in a barn in back of the house and which Marge would ride. The address for the birth of Frederick Brunner in 1897 was 56 Colgate Street. The Cuyahoga County Records show Albert's mother, Christine Brunner, applied for a Marriage License on behalf of Albert Brunner and Mary Wagner on October 2, 1890. Christine Brunner could not write but placed her mark, "X", on the Application and her name was then written in by the witness, Deputy Clerk, H. A. Schwab. Albert Brunner and Mary Wagner were married in Cleveland, Ohio on October 7, 1890 by Pastor William Renter. The 1900 Census confirms Marge Carlin's memory was accurate in that he was residing at 56 Colgate in Cleveland in June, 1900 (age 38) along with his wife, Mary (age 28), and children: Albert (age 8); Elmer (age 5); and, Fred (age 3). Albert Brunner was identified in the census as a day laborer. The Certificate Of Death lists his occupation as Varnish-Maker and his date of death as October 26, 1927. His parents are shown as Fred (probably Frederick as his son was named Frederick) Brunner and Christine Nasker, both having been born in Switzerland. He was residing at 7103 Colgate at the time of his death. He is buried at Alger Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. More About ALBERT BRUNNER: Burial: Cleveland, Ohio Notes for MARY WAGNER: Her Certificate Of Death indicates she was born in Cleveland, Ohio and that she was a housewife. It also states she died at her residence located at 7103 Colgate Avenue NW and had lived in Cleveland for thirty years. The Cleveland Necrology File lists her date of death as March 12, 1925 when he was 52 years old. The date is in error as it also states she was to be buried the same date. Mary Wagner Brunner is buried in Alger Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. More About MARY WAGNER: Burial: March 12, 1925, Cleveland, Ohio More About ALBERT BRUNNER and MARY WAGNER: Marriage: October 07, 1890, Cleveland, Ohio Children of ALBERT BRUNNER and MARY WAGNER are: 4. i. ALBERT GODFREY3 BRUNNER, b. October 05, 1891, Cleveland, Ohio; d. January 12, 1972, Pompano Beach, Florida. ii. ARTHUR ERNST BRUNNER, b. May 03, 1893, Cleveland, Ohio; d. March 21, 1894, Cleveland, Ohio. Notes for ARTHUR ERNST BRUNNER: Paul Hartman, a Cleveland resident who is researching the Brunner family name in Cleveland, informed Jim Carlin that church records show Arthur Ernst Brunner was born May 3, 1893 and died March 21, 1894. Records from the Cuyahoga County Probate Court also indicate Arthur E. Brunner died from pneumonia on March 21, 1894 at the age of 11 months. Dr W. D. Johnson was his physician. Arthur Erny Brunner is buried in the Monroe Street Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. These records show the location of birth as 59 Colgate which is a different address on Colgate than that of 56 Colgate. 5. iii. ELMER CLARENCE BRUNNER, b. December 20, 1894, Cleveland, Ohio; d. June 29, 1976, Belleair, Florida. iv. FREDERICK HERBERT BRUNNER, b. January 22, 1897, Cleveland, Ohio; d. January 17, 1910, Cleveland, Ohio. Notes for FREDERICK HERBERT BRUNNER: Frederick was born on January 22, 1897 in his parent's home at 56 Colgate; Cleveland, Ohio. The midwife present was Fanny Siebert who resided at 1255 Clark Ave; Cleveland, Ohio. Information provided by his brother, Albert G. Brunner, reflected a date of birth of January 20, 1897. However the Return Of A Birth recorded with the Cleveland Police Department reflects a birth date of January 22, 1897. He was baptized on September 26, 1897 under the name Friedrich Herbert Brunner. "Freddy" died in an influenza epidemic. 3. GODFREY J.2 BRUNNER (FREDERICK1) was born Abt. 1865 in Ohio. He married ALICE M. BARNES. She was born Abt. 1869 in Canada, and died December 22, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio. Notes for GODFREY J. BRUNNER: Ancestry 1910 Miracode shows Goffred J. Brunner residing in Cleveland Twp (ED 0066) and born in Ohio with his wife-Alice M, son-Emanual, daughter-Gladys H, and a sister-in-law, Emma B. Lance. Their approximate ages and locations of birth are from this data base. The Cleveland Necrology File shows Godfrey as passing away on December 4, 1939 in Cleveland. He was residing at 1335 West 89th Street at the time of his death. Children of GODFREY BRUNNER and ALICE BARNES are: i. MYRTLE B.3 BRUNNER, d. August 19, 1972, Cleveland, Ohio; m. RALPH R. LEISEK; d. May 27, 1957, Cleveland, Ohio. Notes for MYRTLE B. BRUNNER: At the of her father's death in 1939, she was residing in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Necrology File indicates that she did not have any children. More About MYRTLE B. BRUNNER: Burial: Cleveland, Ohio More About RALPH R. LEISEK: Burial: May 28, 1957, Cleveland, Ohio ii. EMMANUEL G. BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1893, Ohio. Notes for EMMANUEL G. BRUNNER: At the time of his father's death in 1939 he was residing in Washington, D.C. iii. GLADYS H. BRUNNER, b. Abt. 1900, Ohio; m. RANNOW. Notes for GLADYS H. BRUNNER: At the time of her father's death in 1939, she was residing in Athens, Ohio. Generation No. 3 4. ALBERT GODFREY3 BRUNNER (ALBERT2, FREDERICK1) was born October 05, 1891 in Cleveland, Ohio, and died January 12, 1972 in Pompano Beach, Florida. He married EMMA WILSON LYNCH April 16, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of WILLIAM LYNCH and MARTHA BURNS. She was born August 18, 1890 in Cleveland, Ohio, and died March 05, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. Notes for ALBERT GODFREY BRUNNER: Albert G. Brunner was born and raised in Cleveland. (Marti Hause indicates he was born on December 16, 1892.) After his marriage he was employed by the Donald P. Cochrane Paint Company who transferred him to Wheeling, West Virginia. He was transferred back to Cleveland a few years after his daughter, Jeanne, was born in 1918. Approximately 1928, he was transferred to Detroit, Michigan. The Depression came shortly after the move and his employer went bankrupt even though "AG" worked without wages. He was very proud of the fact he kept his family together during the Depression earning a minimal income selling statues door to door. His grandson, James Carlin, remembers ceramic statues being stored in his grandfather's garage on Santa Rosa in the 1950s. The first City Directory in which his name appears is the 1935 Detroit Directory which lists him as a Sales Representative and living with his wife, Emma, at 13133 Wark (later to be changed to Santa Rosa). St Cecilia Church was an important part of the Brunner family life. It was Fr Wholihan who got Albert a job at Kelsey Hayes Wheel Co where he worked until he retired. He became Production Manager for Kelsey Hayes (now Hayes Lammert). Albert was a gifted artist and took up oil painting after his retirement. Several of his grand children and great grandchildren have inherited his artistic talent. In 1971, Albert took his grandson and his wife to dinner at the Top Of The Ponchatrain restaurant to celebrate his grandson's graduation from law school. His grandson remembers Albert telling them the one thing he never could imagine when he was young would be for a plane to fly. When he was young around the turn of the century it was not conceived by him that an object could fly in the air. What would he say about computers, the internet, fax machines and cell phones? A gentlemen's gentlemen, Albert died January 12, 1972 in Pompano Beach. Florida where he resided at the time. Albert Brunner is buried next to his wife and daughters in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, MI. Notes for EMMA WILSON LYNCH: Emma Wilson Lynch was raised by her aunt in Painesville, Ohio after her mother died when Emma was very young. According to Marjorie Carlin, Emma's daughter, she had a cousin Dorothy Giblin (married Philip Giblin). Dorothy and Emma were very close as children. Dorothy Giblin lived in Painesville, Ohio and had a son who was a priest. Emma's grandson, Carl Hause, located his grandmother in the 1910 Census living with her brother-in-law, Thomas Kilgore (listed as Kilegore), in Ohio. (The relationship has not been clarified as it appears she only had a brother.) Marge Carlin saved a news clipping from when her mother and father married in 1912: SOCIAL EVENTS Lynch-Brunner Miss Emma Lynch, formerly of Painesville, was married at St Coleman's church, Cleveland, Tuesday morning, April 16 to Albert Brunner of the firm of Brunner & Sons. After a wedding breakfast at the Hollenden, they came to Painesville and spent the day with Mrs Brunner's aunt, Mrs L. G. Loomis, with whom she lived while attending school here. They were accompanied by her brother, J. D. Lynch of Grand Rapids, Mich, Mrs P. T. Ferrie and Mrs S. E. Burns of Cleveland. A bridal dinner was served at _______. After an informal reception during the evening, the party returned to Cleveland where, after May 1, Mr & Mrs Brunner will receive their friends at their pretty new home on 83rd Street. J. D. Lynch would have been Emma's step brother, John D. Lynch. It is believed that Mrs L. G. Loomis is Catherine Loomis who was married to Lucas G. Loomis and lived at 139 Jackson Street in Painesville at the time of the 1900 Census but it has not been confirmed. Her sister-in-law, Elna (?) Lynch (born May, 1848)) was living there at the time of the Census. Mrs P. T. Ferrie is believed to be Bertha Ferrie, wife of P. T. Ferrie who resided at 200 Woodbine in Painesville at the time of the 1900 Census but it has also not been confirmed. (There was an Anna Lynch residing with them.) Bertha Ferrie could be Emma's aunt, Bertha Burns, sister of Emma's mother, Martha Burns. Mrs S. E. Burns is probably a relationship through Emma's mother, Martha Burns. Emma died in Detroit on March 5, 1951. She was buried through Fred Wood Funeral Home and is interned at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, MI. More About EMMA WILSON LYNCH: Burial: March 08, 1951, Southfield, Michigan More About ALBERT BRUNNER and EMMA LYNCH: Marriage: April 16, 1912, Cleveland, Ohio Children of ALBERT BRUNNER and EMMA LYNCH are: i. Notes for HELEN BRUNNER: Helen attended the University of Detroit and inherited her father's artistic talent. Dianna Carlin has a paining done by Helen in 1926 when she was thirteen years old. It was a visit with his parents to see Helen Brunner in Maryland which resulted in her nephew's first airplane ride which Jim Carlin found to be very unpleasant. ii. MARJORIE ANN BRUNNER, b. November 07, 1916, Wheeling, West Virginia; d. August 22, 1999, Lighthouse Point, Florida; m. JOHN BERNARD CARLIN, SR, June 26, 1937, Detroit, Michigan; b. December 08, 1902, Fairbury, Illinois; d. November 07, 1981, Lighthouse Point, Florida. Notes for MARJORIE ANN BRUNNER: Marjorie Brunner was born on November 7, 1916 in Wheeling, West Virgina (Ohio County). The West Virginia Birth Certificate reads "Margey M. Brunner". This was corrected in 1978 to Marjorie A. Brunner. The Certificate of Birth is recorded at Birth Record #7, Page 16b. She was baptized on December 10, 1916 at St Vincent de Paul Church in Elm Grove, West Virginia. Her god parents were William Lynch (her uncle) and Anna Lynch Beaumont, her mother's half-sister. She resided in West Virginia until approximately 1920 when her family moved back to Cleveland, Ohio. The family stayed in Cleveland until she was 12 and then moved to Detroit, Michigan. For almost forty years, Marjorie lived within a few houses of each other in the same neighborhood. Upon arrival in Detroit, the family lived in a flat at the corner of Santa Rosa (then called Wark) and Buena Vista. After a few years they moved down the street to 13133 Santa Rosa where Marjorie lived until she was married in 1937. After her marriage she lived in an apartment around the corner at Monica and Davison. She then moved behind her parents home to a flat on Monica. After three children were born they moved next door to her parents at 13125 Santa Rosa until 1961 when they moved to 14228 Artesian. Marjorie was employed at the J. L. Hudson store in downtown Detroit before she was married. Marge married John Carlin in St Cecilia Church on June 26, 1937 with Father R. L. Fleming performing the ceremony. Although her sister, Helen Brunner, and her brother-in-law, Ed Carlin, were the Maid of Honor and Best Man, the Marriage Certificate prepared by Fr Fleming indicated Ed and his wife, Grace Carlin, were witnesses. Marge passed away on August 22, 1999. She rests with her husband, parents and sister, Helen, in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, MI. More About MARJORIE ANN BRUNNER: Burial: 1999, Southfield, Michigan Notes for JOHN BERNARD CARLIN, SR: There is no recorded record of his birth made at the time. It was not until 1940 when John and his father filed the birth information with Livingston County, Illinois. Bernard Carlin verified the birth information and signed he was present for the birth in Fairbury, Illinois on December 8, 1902. Born in Fairbury, Illinois, he lived on a farm there until the family moved to Lowell, Indiana. John would love to tell his children about his childhood on the farm, describing farm implements and raising different crops. He told them many times the corn had to be "knee high" by July 4 for it to be a good crop? His wife has a photo of the farm taken probably 1910. John Carlin remembered he lived in Lowell which he described to his kids in the 1940-50s as a small town near the Crown Point Jail from which John Dillinger escaped. John Carlin along with his father, brothers, Walter & Ed, as well as their sisters, Ann & Catherine, moved from Lowell to Detroit, MI to obtain jobs with the auto companies. In the 1927-28 City Directory, "Jack" Carlin is shown as residing at 1256 24th Street. At the time he was a truck driver. He worked for Wettloffer Company in the late 20s but it is not certain if he was a truck driver for this company or another employer. His wife, Marjorie Carlin, remembers the Carlin family living at 6349 Elmhurst while she was dating him. He must have moved from Elmhurst in 1935 as he is listed as residing on Elmhurst in the 1935 City Directory. When he registered with the federal government under the Social Security Act in 1936, he resided at 13138 Stoepel just around the corner from where his future wife lived on Santa Rosa. John was employed at the Ford Motor Company in the Purchasing Department. he enjoyed telling his kids of the stories about Harry Bennet who was the enforcer for Henry Ford I and whose Service Department security men assaulted the UAW organizers on the Miller Road overpass. He left Ford to work with his brother-in-law, Alfred S. Brennan, in insurance. Shortly thereafter, he left to form his own agency. His agency was named Carlin-Detroit Agency which he operated for thirty years until 1969 when he retired to Florida. John met his wife while an usher at St Cecilia Church in Detroit. He was 14 years older than her and did not think she would go out with him if she knew his real age so he told her he was younger than he really was. It worked because they married in 1937. They were married in St Cecilia Church where Marge attended school as would three of their children. Since John had to work the following Monday, they did not have a honeymoon but did stay at the Dearborn Inn for the weekend. (His son, James, would also not be able to have a honeymoon as he had to work the following Monday after his wedding in 1969.) After his marriage, the family lived on the near West side of Detroit until 1960 when they moved to 14228 Artesian. The family lived there until John, his wife and their daughter, Mary, moved to Lighthouse Point, Florida. His sister, Ann Carlin, indicated that her brother attended the local catholic school and then went for a year to Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. It was not college but similar to high school. John loved Notre Dame and his sister said he always thought of himself as a Notre Dame man even though he only went there for one year. John enjoyed telling his kids that he was taught Chemistry at Notre Dame by Knute Rockne. Rockne did teach Chemistry at Notre Dame starting in 1914 so this is entirely possible. He then went to St Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana which again was close to Lowell. This was for a two year period of high school as most colleges at this time had a high school or pre-college curriculum as well as college. Marge Carlin kept his photo album of pictures he took while living at St Joe, including his class graduation picture in 1919. The school records also confirm he was there from 1917-1919 when he graduated. "Jack" also graduated from the University of Detroit College of Commerce & Finance in 1937 and was very proud of the fact he attended college at night while working during the day. He was a Fellow of St Joseph College and his son, John, would later graduate from college at St Joe. He is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, MI.
